Overland Park CranioSacral TherapyCranioSacral therapy (CST) is a gentle treatment that will help alleviate chronic pain and tension by improving the functionality of the CranioSacral system, which includes the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

The CranioSacral technique is gentle, non-invasive, and relaxing. It is often integrated into a regular massage therapy session.

Although not a well known therapy, CST can be helpful for a wide range of physical problems and is often recommended by massage therapists, chiropractors, and even physicians.

The CranioSacral Therapy Technique

The overall goal of CST is to release restrictions in the CranioSacral system to improve the functionality of the central nervous system. With this technique, the therapist applies light pressure (similar to the weight of a nickel) or “holds” to specific regions on your body, most notably on the head, base of the skull, neck, and upper body. CST not only focuses on softening the tissue, but it also applies pressure to certain bones that will aid in releasing tension in the CranioSacral system.

What Happens During a CranioSacral Therapy Session?

CranioSacral therapy is similar to a massage session in that you lie on the massage table in a cozy, quiet room. Unlike most massage sessions, you keep your clothes on throughout the duration of the session, and no lotions or oils are used.

The most common reaction from clients experiencing CST for the first time is how relaxing it is and most clients fall asleep right on the table. As for actual physical changes, you may experience sensations of relief as the therapist releases the restrictions in the CranioSacral system.
